Unmi Song Honored at Breakin’ It Down Conference and Speaks on Transformational Advocacy

October 25, 2025

President Unmi Song joined fellow philanthropic and nonprofit leaders as a featured panelist at the 2025 Breakin’ It Down Conference, held on October 24 at Malcolm X College in Chicago. The plenary session, Choosing Courage, brought together leaders committed to strengthening civic engagement and advancing transformational advocacy during a time of significant social challenges.

Unmi participated alongside Sharon Bush, President of the Grand Victoria Foundation, and David Shapiro, Executive Director of the MacArthur Justice Center. Moderated by Adela Carlin, Senior Director of Training and Community Partnerships at Illinois Partners for Human Service, the conversation explored how philanthropy and nonprofits can work across sectors to foster collaborative advocacy, promote agility, and drive systemic change in pursuit of equity.

The conference opened with a welcome video from Mayor Brandon Johnson, who recognized both Unmi and Deborah Clark, Senior Grants Manager and Assistant Corporate Secretary at Woods Fund Chicago, for their many years of dedicated service — Unmi and Deborah both retire from their respective roles at the end of this year.
